A recreation center in Lancaster County Pennsylvania called us because they were having a fly problem in their indoor pool. Treating for flies at a public pool such as a recreation center, fitness club, or hotel presents many challenges. We need to ensure the safety of the public as well as provide an effective fly treatment. Although this was a huge, Olympic sized pool, the same process can be applied to your pool at your house.
How does a pool have a fly problem?
An occasional fly is nothing much to worry about, but a large fly infestation needs immediate attention. Flies require basic necessities such as food, water, and habitat. For many fly species, organic material is a great food source and habitat location.
Pools by nature are wet environments. In the example in the video below, the drain around the exterior perimeter of the pool was filled with debris and organic material. This led to the pool having a prime fly breeding ground and resulted in a big fly population and problem.
How to treat for flies at a swimming pool
The most effective method for treating and eradicating fly issues near swimming pools is to find their breeding source/habitat and treat and or remove it. A great place to look is the drainage systems of the pool. The drains have a series of pipes and inside of those pipes can accumulate organic debris. Removal of the organic debris is always the best method for treating and preventing fly infestations.
Any treatment method needs to be done cautiously as pools typically have people and pets around them. Our fly treatments always have the safety of people, pets, and the environment as the top priority.
Fly Baits
We use a variety of fly baits to treat around pools for flies. Some fly baits are granular, which are small pellets that can be sprinkled in areas where the flies are. The flies eat the bait and then are eradicated. Care should be taken to ensure the granular fly bait is not introduced into the pool or where people, pets, or wildlife can access it. Granular fly bait cannot be used for indoor pools.
We also can use an aerosol fly bait. This method involves treating areas with the aerosol and works similar to the granular fly bait. The flies are attracted to the bait, land on it, and then are eradicated. We like to apply the aerosol fly bait to trash cans, parts of patio furniture, and umbrellas. Again, caution needs to be taken to ensure that non-target species do not have access to the fly bait.
Fly Sprays and Liquid treatments
Liquid fly sprays can also be effective to treat for flies when used correctly. Since flies can fly, liquid treatments need to be applied to areas where the flies are going to land or feed. For outdoor pools, we can treat the lawn or grass with a liquid fly treatment to reduce fly populations. For indoor pools, more care is needed to avoid contaminating the pool. Indoor pool liquid fly treatments are done in specific places and in much smaller quantities.
