The deer mouse is very common in Pennsylvania. These rodents, when they infest homes and buildings, can cause big problems for the occupants. One Deer Mouse can quickly become many mice in a relatively short time period. In this article we’ll discuss the biology, habitat, and treatment methods for the Deer Mouse Pennsylvania.
What is a deer mouse?
A deer mouse is a small rodent found all over Pennsylvania. They have a brown fur on top and white belly. The white footed mouse is similar in appearance and also found in Pennsylvania. In fact, the two species are very similar with only slight differences.
Deer Mouse Biology
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, one female deer mouse can have 3-4 litters per year. Each litter contains 3-7 young mice which means that one deer mouse can be responsible for almost 30 new mice in a year! This is why a small deer mouse infestation can quickly grow to a large problem pretty quickly.
Although a deer mouse can live over a year, most don’t live a year in the wild. This is because they are preyed upon by other animals such as fox, cats, hawks, owls, and pest professionals like us!
Deer mice are omnivores which means they will eat both meat and plant-based meals. Their diet can consist of nuts, berries, insects, and grains.
How long can mice live?
As we said before, most deer mice don’t live a full year in the wild but what about in a lab or controlled setting? We have a whole article that you can read that goes into detail about this.
