When people suspect they have a bed bug problem, the first place we tend to inspect is the bed. As their name suggests, bed bugs like to live in and near beds because that is where people spend a lot of time. People are the main food source for bed bugs and need to stay close to us to live. In this article we will show you where to look for bed bugs on the bed.
Why do bed bugs live near beds?
Bed bugs feed primarily on humans and humans spend many hours a day in bed. Bed bugs live near beds because that is where their food source is. Beds also are warm, have many hiding places, and contain their food source. This means that bed bugs are living at an all-you-can-eat buffet!
What is a bed bug?
Bed Bugs are blood feeding pests that use human blood as a food source. They are small but can be seen with the naked eye. Some people have described bed bugs as having an “apple seed” shape which is pretty accurate.
The color of bed bugs will change depending on if they have fed or not. Bed bugs that are clear or almost white have not had a meal. If a bed bug has fed on a blood meal, their color can be red to brown in color.
According to the Penn State Extension Service, bed bugs do not transmit any diseases. Unlike mosquitoes and ticks who can transmit disease, bed bugs cannot. Bed Bugs can cause some health problems such as bacterial infections and allergic reactions. Other health problems caused by bed bugs include anxiety and insomnia as the stress of having bed bugs can take a mental toll.
I think my bed has bed bugs, where do I look?
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
Many people think they have bed bugs simply because they see bug bites on their body. This is not evidence enough of a bed bug infestation.

When we perform a bed bug inspection, we look for the following evidence which indicates bed bug activity:
- Live or Dead Bed Bugs
- Bed Bug Eggs
- Bed Bug Casings
- Bed Bug Excrement
Where else can bed bugs be?
Since bed bugs can be found anywhere humans can be found, inspecting the rest of your home is critical to eradicating these pests. Other areas we inspect for bed bugs include couches, chairs, cars, and carpets.
We have a whole article on how to check your couch for bed bugs that you can find here.
