In the fall, there are specific pests that infest Pennsylvania homes. We all know that the cooler weather of fall drives the mice and rodents inside. Mice and rodents are not the only pests that make their way into homes. Stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and lady beetles are some of the common fall pests in Pennsylvania that we find and can treat.
In this article we will discuss each of these fall invaders, how they get into homes, and what professionals like Prudential Pest Solutions can do to help.
Boxelder Bugs invade Pennsylvania Homes in the Fall

Boxelder Bugs are native to the United States and typically feed on Boxelder trees, Maples, and other plants.
Most homeowners don’t even notice boxelder bugs in the spring and summer, but they definitely notice them in the fall! Also known as the Halloween Bug, the boxelder bugs gather in huge numbers in the fall in Pennsylvania. This is the time of year that homeowners notice them, and they become a nuisance.
The boxelder bug is also known as the Halloween Bug due to its Halloween coloration of being black and orange, and the fact that they gather and become a nuisance starting in October in Pennsylvania.

Boxelder bugs will enter Pennsylvania homes through small gaps in cracks around windows, siding, and soffitts. You will most likely find them congregating on the southside of the home, because this is the warm side of the house.
Although they are a great nuisance to homeowners, the boxelder bug will not damage or destroy the home. Boxelder bugs do not bite or sting but can release a pungent odor when crushed.
Boxelder Bug Treatments in Pennsylvania
The good news is that boxelder bugs can be successfully reduced and treated by professional pest control company such as Prudential Pest Solutions. Although they gather in large numbers, the boxelder bug is not particularly difficult to treat and eradicate around your home. We use a liquid insecticide applied to the outside of the home and focus the treatment around areas where the boxelder bugs will try to enter the structure. This includes treating around the windows, doors, siding, soffit areas, and chimneys. By treating with a liquid insecticide, we are creating a chemical barrier that will reduce the amount of boxelder bugs that can make it inside of the house.
Lady Beetles invade Pennsylvania Homes in the Fall

The Asian Lady Beetle, also called the Multi-colored lady beetle, is a non-native pest that was intentionally introduced into the United States in 1978. Although it looks similar to a Lady Bug, that is native to Pennsylvania, the Asian Lady Beetle is a different and distinct species.
In the late 1970’s the US Department of Agriculture introduced the Asian Lady Beetle to the US to control aphids. Lady beetles are very good at reducing aphid populations because the aphid is a primary food source of the nymph stage of the lady beetle.
It wasn’t until 1993 that the Asian Lady Beetle was able to over-winter and become a huge nuisance to Pennsylvania Homeowners
Lady Beetles were intentionally introduced to control the Aphid population on plants in Pennsylvania and the United States in the late 1970’s
Lady Beetle damage and allergies
Much like the boxelder bug above, and the stink bug which we cover below, the Asian Lady Beetle releases a foul odor when handled or crushed. This odor can cause allergic reactions in some people. Additionally, when lady beetles gather in large numbers inside of a home, they can stain walls which are difficult if not impossible to clean.
Lady Beetle treatments in Pennsylvania
Asian Lady Beetles enter Pennsylvania homes through gaps and crevices around windows, soffits, siding, and doors. We use a liquid insecticide to treat these areas on the outside of the home. This liquid insecticide provides a chemical barrier and will treat and reduce the amount of lady beetles that the homeowner will find inside of the house.
Stink Bugs invade Pennsylvania Homes in the Fall

The Stink Bug is an invasive species that is not native to Pennsylvania. It was introduced into the United States accidentally in Pennsylvania in the late 1990’s.
The stink bug gets its name due to the distinctive and foul odor it creates when handled or crushed. Stink bugs feed on plants during the spring and summer and then invade Pennsylvania homes in the fall
Stink Bugs arrived in Allentown Pennsylvania in 1998 and immediately spread to become a nuisance to all Pennsylvania homeowners.
Stink Bug Treatments in Pennsylvania
We use the exact same treatment method to eradicate and reduce stink bug populations as we do for boxelder bugs and lady beetles. Using a liquid insecticide, we treat around the areas that the stink bugs typically enter a home. This includes treating around windows, doors, soffits, and siding. The liquid insecticide creates a chemical barrier which eradicates and reduces the stink bugs trying to enter the home in the Fall.
