Whether you’ve had chickens for a long time or are just starting, rats can become a big problem. Rats love hanging around chickens and chicken coops because of the food, water, and habitat that chicken coops provide. There are many options for rat treatments for chicken coops but we prefer to use Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Learn more about CO2 rat treatments for chicken coops.
Carbon Dioxide Rat Treatments
Carbon Dioxide, CO2, is a great option for treating rats near chickens and chicken coops. CO2 is injected into the rat holes and dens. Once under the ground, the CO2 displaces the oxygen and the rats are asphyxiated. This means that the rats simply “fall asleep” and never wake up. Yes, the same CO2 that is in your soda can be used to effectively treat for rats and rodents.
Why is CO2 used to treat rats?
CO2, when applied directly into the rat dens and nests, is a very effective method for eradicating rat problems near chickens and chicken coops. Unlike baits, poisons, or traps, CO2 is harmless to other animals and people. This is because the CO2 we use is the same CO2 you create when you exhale. When injected under the ground and into rat dens and nests though, it becomes an effective rat problem solution.
Using rat baits, poisons, or traps can pose problems and hazards to people, pets, chickens, and wildlife. This is because even if done correctly, there is still a risk with using these other methods. For example, if a poisoned rat were to be eaten by a hawk, owl, cat, or other wildlife, then that animal would also ingest some of that same poison the rat had consumed. This is called secondary poisoning and is a very real risk when using rat poisons and baits. By using CO2, there is no risk at all for secondary poisoning.
Another risk of using rat baits, poisons, or traps is that there is always a chance that the bait becomes accessible to non-target species such as people, pets, and other animals. Since the CO2 is injected directly into the rat dens and nests, there is no risk of poisoning to other species other than the rats.
Besides the risks of secondary poisoning, rat baits, poisons, and traps are not as effective as CO2 treatments. This is because the rats have a buffet of food, the chicken feed, that the rats can feed on. The bait or rat poison is a competing food source, and the rats may still prefer to eat the chicken feed as opposed to the bait. With CO2, there is no food involved so the treatment is more effective. It doesn’t matter if the rats prefer the chicken feed or not, the CO2 is treating them in their dens and nests and isn’t dependent on other food sources.
Why CO2 rat treatments are so effective

Carbon Dioxide treatments are so effective against rats because it is a low-risk treatment method and doesn’t depend on the rat’s food preference.
There is zero risk of secondary poisoning to wildlife such as hawks, owls, cats, and other animals. As long as the rat is in the den or nest, the CO2 will do the rest!
