This client in Malvern Pa had 3 yellow jacket nests on their property. 2 of the nests were in the ground in the backyard, and 1 was in the framing of the garage door.
I was able to treat and remove the 2 yellow jacket nests in the backyard. These yellow jackets excavate a large amount of soil in order to create a cavity in which they construct their nests.
The nests are just like the ones we see above ground and in houses in that they have combs and a paper shell. The soil covering the nests is often loose and the nest can easily be exposed and removed.
Ground yellow jackets are typically very aggressive when you treat and remove their nest. I always wear my full bee suit when I am treating and removing yellow jacket nests.
Using PT PI, I inject into the mouth of the nest and continue to apply it as more of the nest is exposed and eventually removed. This ensures that all of the nooks and crannies are treated and that no part of the nest is left untreated.
After the yellow jacket nests have been treated and removed, I fill the cavities with soil. The remaining yellow jackets will be unable to re-build the nest since the queen was killed during the nest treatment.
Since these nests were in the backyard, I sprayed the area where the nests were located to kill off the remaining yellow jackets so they posed no further threat to the homeowners.
The last nest was located in or under the garage door framing. I checked the inside of the garage to make sure the nest was in the wall. Just like the first 2 nests, I applied PT PI into the void behind the framing. This chemical will permeate the entire void and kill off the nest.
Then a long term residual insecticidal dust was applied for long term yellow jacket treatment. The remaining yellow jackets and the outside of the garage door framing were treated with a liquid insecticide.
