Rats, mice, and other rodents will frequently try and live near horses and other livestock because of food availability, water, and shelter. Horse farms frequently experience rat and rodent problems in the barns, stables, and around food troughs. We have solutions to resolve ANY rat or rodent issue you have. Looking for a rat treatment for your horse farm? We have you covered!
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) to treat for Rats and Rodents
Treatments for rats and rodents on a horse farm or stable need to be both safe for the animals, people, and the environment as well as being effective against rats. This challenge in treatment led us to the use of natural CO2 (carbon dioxide) as a main treatment method to combat rats and rodents near horses and their food and water. Yes, the same carbon dioxide that your body creates when you breathe and exhale, can also be used to resolve rat and rodent infestations!
Inert Gas Injection (IGI) and how it works to treat and eliminate rats and rodents
Inert Gas Injection, also known as IGI, is a process where an inert gas such as CO2 is used to treat for rats and rodents in their dens and holes. This is the same CO2 that is created by your body when you exhale. IGI works by injecting CO2 into the rat dens and rat holes directly. The CO2 quickly, quietly, and completely fills the many rat tunnels and channels under the ground. Once inside of the den and tunnels, the CO2 displaces the oxygen, meaning that the rats and rodents in that area no longer are breathing oxygen needed to live. The rats and rodents simply “fall asleep” and are asphyxiated, thus resolving the rat issue. This humane rat and rodent control method is our primary method for eliminating rat and rodent populations on horse farms and stables.
Is CO2 a safer alternative than rat poisons and rat baits?
CO2 is a much safer alternative to traditional rat baits and rat poisons for a few reasons. The first reason is that with CO2 there is no risk of secondary poisoning. Secondary poisoning is where a poisoned rat is eaten by another animal increasing the risk to that other animal of poisoning from the rat bait.
Animals that can be impacted by rat and rodent bait and poisons include: cats, dogs, hawks, owls, fox, and other scavenging wildlife. By using CO2, there is zero risk of secondary poisoning to the other animals, people, or wildlife in the area.
Another reason that CO2 is a safer alternative to traditional rat and rodent baiting and poisoning is the access to the bait and rat poison. With CO2 we are injecting a natural compound, carbon dioxide, into the rat den and tunnels. Under the ground and in the dens and tunnels, the CO2 poses zero risk to horse, livestock, other animals, and people. With rat poisons and rat bait, there is a chance that horses, other animals, and people could come in contact with the rat bait directly causing an issue. We do offer this service in a controlled, professional, and location specific way that you can learn more about below.

Will carbon dioxide CO2 work for Groundhogs on my horse farm?
Carbon dioxide, CO2, is an effective treatment for rats, rodents, and groundhogs! Groundhogs are large, burrowing rodents that building their dens on horse farms, in and around horse stables, and near livestock. Groundhogs can cause injury to horses and livestock, damage equipment, consume or contaminate food sources, and carry disease. Our IGI system will effectively and professionally eliminate groundhogs from your horse farm and stables.
Traditional Rat and Rodent Treatments for Horse Farms
Our first choice of treatment methods for rats at a horse farm is always CO2 due to the low risks listed above. There are times, however, where traditional rat and rodent treatments need to be used. Traditional methods include the use of rat traps and or rat baits. Both of these methods will reduce the rat population but come with additional risk as well as other concerns.
Rat traps for horse farms
Rat traps have been used by horse farms for hundreds of years. Although the types of rat traps have changed, the process remains the same. Rat traps are used to physically capture and dispatch rats and other rodents in a quick and humane way. An issue that arises with using rat traps is the placement of the trap itself. Rat traps need to be located where the rats are but not be a danger to other animals, the horses, or people. Rat traps must also be baited with a rat attractant. In a horse farm with horse feed, grain, and hay, this can cause issues with the rats avoiding the traps for an easier meal elsewhere.
Rat Baits for horse farms
Using rat bait on a horse farm can be done but must be carefully thought out and implemented. Rat bait can come in many forms and with different active ingredients but the process is still the same. The rat encounters the rat bait, feeds on the bait, and then later (sometimes days or a week), perishes. Rat bait can be great at reducing rat populations in specific areas when done correctly and with safety as the top priority.
We always place rat bait into locked and secured stations called bait stations. These stations are designed to allow rats, mice, and other rodents to enter, feed, and then leave. The stations are designed to not allow animals larger than a rat to enter and are locked so that people cannot access the bait inside.
There is always a risk of secondary poisoning, see above, when using most types of rat baits so caution is very important. This is why we like to use carbon dioxide as our primary method for rat control on horse farms and stables.
