Hearing what sounds like an elephant above your head in the attic or ceiling? Depending on when you are hearing the noise, it could be a squirrel in the house. In this article we will demonstrate getting squirrels out of the house and keeping them out of the house.
Squirrels are excellent climbers and can enter a home or attic in many different ways.
Once inside of the house or attic, squirrels can cause tremendous damage in a short amount of time.
This is because squirrels are rodents, and rodents like to chew.
How to get the squirrels out
Squirrels that have made it into a home need to be removed and removed immediately to limit damage to the home. One method we use to get squirrels out of the house is to use a one-way door. A one-way door is a spring-loaded device that allows the squirrels to exit the home but not re-enter.
The Squirrels are out, now what?
We will leave the one-way door over the squirrel entrance for approximately a week to allow all of the squirrels to exit. There are some other factors we must consider though before we can seal up the squirrel entrance:
- What if the squirrels try and chew another opening somewhere else on the house?
- Are there any young, or juvenile squirrels that cannot exit through the one-way door?
- Is the homeowner still hearing noises in their attic or ceiling?
To address these concerns, we sometimes have to take additional steps to resolve the squirrel issue
We can set traps to physically remove the squirrels from the property if the squirrels try to make a new entrance
During our initial consultation and depending on the time of year, we may have to consider the possibility of juvenile squirrels being present
If the homeowner hasn’t heard a peep in more than a few days, we can be confident that the squirrel issue has been resolved.
How did the squirrels get into the house or attic?
Since squirrels are rodents, they are excellent climbers. Often, squirrels will use a nearby tree branch to access the roof of the house. Once on the roof, the squirrels can find a way into the house or attic.
Some of the common areas we find squirrels entering a house include:
- Ridge Vent
- Gable Vent
- Exhaust Vents
- Fascia Boards
- Old or Inactive Woodpecker Holes
- Soffits
These are just a few of the many places that we have found squirrels entering a home or attic.
Squirrel Trapping and Removal
Squirrels are prolific breeders, and a single female can create many squirrels in one year. This means that a small squirrel population can quickly become a large squirrel problem within a few years.
Trapping and removing squirrels is a good method for reducing the squirrel population in a specific area. Although there will always be squirrels in an area, having too many squirrels in one area can lead to problems.
Our squirrel trapping and removal services will lower your squirrel population and decrease the chance that squirrel tries to get into the house.
Why do I have so many squirrels?
Squirrels need the same basic necessities as people: food, water, and shelter. By living near humans, squirrels are able to take advantage of the resources that we have near to us.
Whether its food from a bird feeder, or water from a pond, squirrels will be where people are.
