August, September, and October are the most common months where yellow jackets, hornets, and wasp nests are at their largest in Pennsylvania. This yellow jacket nest was in the ceiling of a home in Kennett Square Pa.
How did we know where the yellow jacket nest was?
This yellow jacket nest was located in between the drywall of the ceiling and the fiberglass insulation above the ceiling. The clients could hear the buzzing, scratching, and chewing of the yellow jackets in their growing nest.
In addition to the noise that the nest was generating, we were able to locate the nest due to the slight staining showing on the ceiling. As the yellow jackets create their nest, they chew at the drywall of the area near their nest. This results in the drywall being EXTREMELY thin in the area directly under the nest.
In fact, the drywall can be so degraded from the yellow jackets and moisture of the nest that you can put your finger right through the ceiling with minimal effort at all!
Sometimes the homeowner thinks there is a water leak above the ceiling due to the staining on the drywall. We even had a homeowner poke his finger through the drywall thinking it was a water leak. Much to their surprise and horror, they had pierced directly into a yellow jacket nest!
Professional Yellow Jacket Treatment
Once we identify where the yellow jacket nest is, then we perform a pinpoint treatment to eradicate and remove the nest. For the yellow jacket nest in the ceiling in Kennett Square, we applied an aerosol insecticide to the nest to quickly kill the yellow jackets.
Once the nest has been treated, we removed the nest by opening up the drywall of the ceiling. We always remove as little drywall as possible. This usually means we only remove the damage drywall that the yellow jackets were chewing at.
We then apply a longer residual insecticidal dust to the area above the ceiling to treat any yellow jackets that escaped our initial treatment. Then the hole is taped up and a drywall repair professional is called to repair the ceiling and patch the area.
How did the yellow jackets get in the ceiling?
Yellow jackets are very good at finding small gaps in brick, siding, and soffitting to enter homes and structures. For this nest in Kennett Square, the yellow jackets had entered the structure where the dormer roof met the main roof. The yellow jackets then went into the structure a foot or two and created their nest.
