This homeowner in Reading PA, which is in Berks County, was hearing scratching noises about the ceiling in their second story bedroom. They were also finding live yellow jackets in the second floor of the home.
Suspecting they had a yellow jacket nest, they called the yellow jacket experts at Prudential Pest Solutions!
When we arrived to the home, we immediately suspected there was a yellow jacket nest above the ceiling in the attic. I donned my bee suit so that I could get a closer look in the attic without risk of being stung.
When I approached the area above the bedroom where they were hearing activity in the attic, I noticed there was an air conditioner line that protruded through the wall. I could see daylight around the line and also saw yellow jacket nesting material that extended from the HVAC line into the insulation. This is where the yellow jacket nest is going to be found.
I began removing some of the fiberglass batt insulation to expose the nest. We use an aerosol insecticide called PT PI to treat all of our yellow jacket and hornet nests. PT PI is a very fast acting, quick killing product that is great for treating yellow jacket nests.
I inserted the applicator into the nest and began the treatment. The PT PI permeates the entire nest area and quickly kills the yellow jackets in the nest. This quick killing is VERY important since we are working in close quarters to hundreds of stinging insects!
Once we start removing more of the nest from the attic void, we continue to apply the PT PI to ensure that the entire nest is treated and dead. Once the nest has been treated and removed, I apply a long lasting dust insecticide to the void where the nest was located. This product will provide long term treatment to any remaining yellow jackets that try and return to the area where the nest was located.
Usually we will seal up the gap where the HVAC line comes into the attic from the outside of the house. In this case, the line entered the attic three stories above the ground and was not accessible to us from the outside.
Instead, I sealed up around the HVAC from the inside of the attic space. The sealant we use is a low expansion, hard forming foam that is black in color. It is similar to the yellow or orange expansion foam found in many hardware stores.
Since the foam we use is attached to a foam gun, we have better control of the foam and thus can make the sealant look cleaner and nicer while still sealing up the gaps.
Once the HVAC was sealed up, I inspected the rest of the attic space to ensure that there was no other entry ways for the outside yellow jackets to enter the attic.
There are always yellow jackets on the outside of the nest that were gathering resources for the colony. These yellow jackets are returning and finding out that their front door is sealed up and their home is gone!
For these remaining yellow jackets on the outside of the home we sprayed a liquid insecticide to kill them off and any new yellow jackets that try to enter the area.
