This Bald Faced Hornet nest was built under the Air Conditioner unit on the side of our client’s home. Imagine being the HVAC tech that had to service this unit!
Our client in Downingtown Pennsylvania called us to treat and remove a bald faced hornet nest that was hanging under their air conditioner unit. The client had a HVAC tune-up scheduled in the near future and didn’t want the technician servicing the air conditioner to get seriously injured by these stinging insects.
After I suited up in my sting prevention bee suit, I prepared my equipment and products for the treatment. I like to use a chemical called PT PI from BASF as my preferred chemical for hornets, wasps, and yellow jackets. I really like PT PI because it permeates the nest quickly and kills the insects quickly. This is very important when dealing with hundreds or thousands of stinging insects.
I approach the nest slowly and delibrately. I’m of the belief that if you are calm, then the bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets will be calm. I inject the PT PI directly into the hornet nest main opening. Since the product works so quickly, it creates a dam of dead hornets in the nest opening and prevents the rest of the hornets from exiting the nest. I then inject into the side of the nest to kill of the remaining hornets.
There will always be hornets that were outside of the nest before the treatment occurs. These hornets’ jobs are to find food and other resources for the nest. Once the nest is treated, these hornets will hover around the nest opening but will not enter the treated nest.
Once the activity within the nest ceases, I removed the nest from under the air conditioner. The hornets that were out of the nest already return to the area where the nest was and will sometimes even collect where the former nest was located. For this reason, we always apply a residual liquid insecticide to the area where the nest was located.
I used a Stihl backpack mist blower to apply Suspend Polyzone, which is a Deltamethrin chemical made my Bayer. The client will still some straggling hornets for the rest of the day but by the next day there should be no more hornets in the area of treatment.
I thought this hornet nest was unique because it was built directly underneath an air conditioner as opposed to the more commonly built nests in trees or bushes. Since the nest was mounted vertically, it had a flat top which is also unusual.
