bald face hornet nest in bush in Kennett Square PA

Bald Faced Hornet Nest Treatment and Removal

This bald faced hornet nest was in a bush in Kennett Square PA. Kennett Square is in Chester County in South Eastern Pennsylvania. The nest was located in the middle of a bush a few feet above the ground.

After putting on my bee suit, I approach the nest and apply PT PI into the main nest opening. This chemical works extremely fast and permeates the whole nest. The other advantage of PT PI is that there is no residual effect meaning that the product works quickly but doesn’t leave any long term treatment.

Once the nest has been treated I use a small saw to cut through the main support branch. I then remove the nest and we use a liquid chemical to spray the bush down.

This will kill off any of the hornets that return to area of the bush where the nest was located. Prudential Pest Solutions is a Veteran and Family owned and operated pest control and exterminating company.

Bald Faced Hornet Nest in Shed

These bald faced hornets created a nest inside of our client’s open shed in Coatesville Pa which is in Chester County, South Eastern Pennsylvania. The homeowner discovered the hornet nest when they were doing some gardening and needed supplies from inside the shed. They ran out and called us right away to treat and remove this nest.

This job was pretty interesting because at the end of the treatment we were able to examine the various developmental stages of the bald faced hornets. It’s not very often that we are able to see in great detail a still fully intact and alive larval and pre-adult stages.

I used my favorite aerosol PT PI to treat the nest. You can see that when I start the treatment process, the hornets immediately die and start dropping out of the main entrance of the nest. When the treatment begins, the nest becomes very loud with what sounds like a very loud buzzing.

Once the noise subsides, we can start to remove the nest and scrape off any nesting material stuck to the shed. After I treated and removed the bald faced hornet nest, I treated the surrounding area to kill off any of the remaining hornets not in the nest at the time of treatment.

We then clean up the area and return to the service van for a close-up view of the inner workings of the nest. This nest had all of the developmental stages of the bald faced hornet from egg to larva to adults.

It was really fascinating to open up the white caps of the comb and find adults ready to emerge as well as pre-adults still developing. You can even see the worm-like larva moving around.

Without the adult members of the nest being there, there was no chance that any of the stages in the nest would survive. That being said, I always find dead hornets in my garage when I take a nest home. This is because the adults that were about to emerge before the treatment still emerge from the nest but are not very strong so they do not survive.

Yellow Jacket Nest in Art Studio

Our client in Kennett Square PA noticed live and dead yellow jackets in their art studio. There was a small hole in the ceiling where the yellow jackets were entering the studio. They knew they needed a yellow jacket removal expert so they called in the best, Prudential Pest Solutions!

After putting my bee suit on, I extended my telescopic ladder to get up close and personal to the hole in the ceiling. Using my favorite aerosol product, PT PI, I injected into the hole to kill off the nest. Once the activity in the ceiling subsided, I used my drywall saw to open a small hole in the ceiling.

I usually just remove the damaged section of drywall directly under the nest. This allow us to remove the nest and makes the drywall repair small and simple. We try and remove the nest in complete pieces to limit the amount of larva and nesting material from causing a mess.

As I remove the nest and nesting material, I drop the pieces onto my tarp below. Once all of the nest and nesting material has been removed, I inspect the ceiling void and apply a long residual insecticidal dust to the void. This dust treats any future yellow jackets that enter the area. I then tape the opening to prevent any more yellow jackets from entering the art studio.

Once the nest has been treated and removed and the area taped off, all that’s left to do is clean-up. I use a battery powered backpack vacuum to remove live and dead yellow jackets and nesting material that was in the art studio. This leaves the client with no work to do other than hire a drywall professional to repair the small opening we made in the ceiling.

Yellow jacket nest in wall of garage

Yellow Jacket Nest in Wall of Garage

This yellow jacket nest was inside the wall of the garage in Newtown Square PA. The yellow jackets could be seen coming and going from a hole in the ground outside the wall. The tenants were finding live and dead yellow jackets in the garage which indicated that the nest was in the wall.

After I put on my sting prevention suit, I injected PT PI directly into the hole outside where the yellow jackets were entering the garage wall. I then moved inside the garage and treated into a hole in the wall. The wall had several soft spots where I suspected the nest was located.

Using my drywall saw, I opened the wall up a little bit to expose the nest and continue treating. Once the noise inside the wall subsided a bit, I created a larger opening and started to remove the nest. The nest was stacked in the wall.

The wall cavity was was on 4″ deep so the combs of the nest were also not very deep. The yellow jackets made their nest tall because they couldn’t make it any deeper. Once the nest was removed, I removed the paper debris and dead yellow jackets from the wall void.

I then apply a long term residual insecticide dust into the wall cavity to kill any stragglers that make their way into the wall. Tape is then used to close off the opening and prevent yellow jackets from entering the garage.

This yellow jacket nest was located in Newtown Square Pennsylvania which is in Delaware County in South Eastern Pennsylvania. We were able to treat and remove this yellow jacket nest so the tenants could use their garage again without fear of being stung.

Newtown Square PA Exterminator

Hornet Nest on Roof

This MASSIVE bald faced hornet nest was under the soffit on a home in Newtown Square Pennsylvania. The nest was located above the second story roof under a soffit vent.

Since the nest was not able to be reached by ladder alone, I had to get onto the roof to treat and remove the nest. The nest was located on a steep section of roof that required me to get onto the front of the house and climb my way to the backside of the home.

Once I was within reach of the nest, I sat down and scooted toward the hornet nest. Getting close to the nest was the only way to effectively treat and remove the bald face hornet nest. Using PT PI, I injected directly into the main nest opening. Hornets immediately began exiting the nest. Most of them were dead or dying within a few seconds of treatment. Quick killing action is the best method to safely treat and remove a hornet nest.

hornet nest newtown square
hornet nest on roof in newtown square pa

Once the nest was treated, I used my scraper tool to dislodge the nest from the soffit. The paper outer layer of the nest easily came loose from the soffit but the internal combs remained firmly attached. Removing the comb was more difficult than removing the paper outer layer. Bald Face Hornets firmly attach their nests to the structure to prevent them from dislodging during wind and storms.

After the nest was removed, I applied a long term residual insecticidal dust to the area. This will kill the remaining hornets that were out of the nest during the treatment. The remaining hornets will be dead and gone within a day or two after the treatment. Since the nest was located above the roof, there was no danger to people from the remaining hornets.

yellow jacket nest bathroom exhaust

Yellow Jacket Nest in Bathroom Exhaust

Our clients in Glenmoore Pennsylvania, Chester County noticed a ton of yellow jackets coming and going from the louvered vents of the bathroom exhaust.

There was some staining on the inside ceiling indicating that the nest was directly above the ceiling. The ceiling drywall was still firm and showed no evidence of actual damage so I decided to treat and remove the yellow jacket nest from the outside.

Upon treating the nest and removing the louvered cover, I discovered that the yellow jacket nest was ENORMOUS. I could only access the nest by sticking my arm into the exhaust vent opening. The nest spanned across 2 ceiling joists and included comb and a lot of paper nesting material. I was only able to reach my arm in to about elbow deep so I had to use my saw to help remove some of the nest.

Once I ensured ALL of the nest and nesting material was removed from the void surrounding the bathroom exhaust, I applied a long term residual insecticidal dust to the area. Tape was then used to cover the bathroom exhaust opening to prevent the many yellow jackets that were flying around from re-entering the space.

Since the exhaust vent was coming from a powder room on the first floor I was comfortable temporarily taping off the opening. This is because the powder room doesn’t have a shower in it and thus didn’t have a lot of moisture to exhaust. The purpose of a bathroom exhaust is to remove excess moisture from the bathroom and exhaust it out of the home. The homeowners will remove the tape and install a new louvered vent cover in the near future.

After the nest was treated and removed and the entrance taped off, I cleaned up all of the nesting material. There was an absolute ton of nesting material that we removed and the clean-up took longer then most yellow jacket jobs.

yellow jacket nest west chester

Yellow Jacket Nest in Ceiling West Chester

This client thought they had a water leak in the ceiling above the bathroom on the 3rd floor of their home in West Chester Pennsylvania. They noticed that there were some soft spots in the drywall and assumed it was a water leak. When they touched the drywall ceiling, it was so soft that their finger went right through! What they found wasn’t a water leak, but a yellow jacket nest!

When the yellow jackets came flooding into the bathroom, the homeowners quickly exited the room and shut the door. They originally thought they had honey bees and called a apiarist, a bee keeper. The bee keeper came out and confirmed that their issue was yellow jackets and not honey bees. The homeowners then called the professionals at Prudential Pest Solutions to treat and remove yellow jacket nest.

When I got to the bathroom, there were mostly dead yellow jackets on the floor by the only window in the bathroom. There was a finger sized hole in the ceiling by the shower where the homeowner had pushed through. I suited up in my bee suit and got to work.

My preferred method for treating yellow jacket nests in structures is to apply a product called PT PI directly into the nest. This chemical works very quickly to kill the yellow jackets and it permeates the entire ceiling void. Once the nest is treated, we remove the nest and apply a long lasting residual insecticidal dust to the area. For this job I used a dust called Tempo Dust. After the treatment is completed, I apply tape to close off the opening where the nest was. This prevents any straggling yellow jackets from entering the bathroom.

After the treatment is completed, the nest is removed, and the hole taped up, it’s time to clean-up the area. I use a battery powered backpack vacuum to remove the dead yellow jackets, nest, and drywall. This leaves a clean and professional appearance for the client. When we leave a yellow jacket job, the only thing the homeowners have to do is repair the small section of drywall we removed.

yellow jacket nest soil

Yellow Jacket Nest in Top Soil Bag

We were at a client’s home in Nottingham Pennsylvania which is located in south west Chester County in South Eastern Pennsylvania. The client had a few yellow jacket nests around the property and one was located INSIDE a half used bag of top soil!

I noticed yellow jackets entering and exiting a bag of top soil under the deck of our client’s home. After I donned my bee suit, I proceeded to treat the opening of the bag. After we had treated the initial yellow jackets, I started digging into the top soil bag looking for the nest.

After digging a few inches into the loose top soil, I could not find the nest. Not wanting to make a mess of dirt under our client’s deck, I moved the top soil bag into the lawn. Once I started digging deeper into the bag, I exposed the still very active yellow jacket nest. I treated and removed the yellow jacket nest and sealed the top soil bag back up. We didn’t use any residual chemical into the bag or the nest because the client was eventually going to use the soil and we didn’t want to contaminate the entire bag.

This was the first yellow jacket nest that I ever found and treated that was located inside of a top soil bag. Imagine grabbing that bag of top soil to do some gardening and not realize there was a nest in there!

hornet nest air conditioner

Hornet Nest Air Conditioner

This Bald Faced Hornet nest was built under the Air Conditioner unit on the side of our client’s home. Imagine being the HVAC tech that had to service this unit!

Our client in Downingtown Pennsylvania called us to treat and remove a bald faced hornet nest that was hanging under their air conditioner unit. The client had a HVAC tune-up scheduled in the near future and didn’t want the technician servicing the air conditioner to get seriously injured by these stinging insects.

After I suited up in my sting prevention bee suit, I prepared my equipment and products for the treatment. I like to use a chemical called PT PI from BASF as my preferred chemical for hornets, wasps, and yellow jackets. I really like PT PI because it permeates the nest quickly and kills the insects quickly. This is very important when dealing with hundreds or thousands of stinging insects.

I approach the nest slowly and delibrately. I’m of the belief that if you are calm, then the bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets will be calm. I inject the PT PI directly into the hornet nest main opening. Since the product works so quickly, it creates a dam of dead hornets in the nest opening and prevents the rest of the hornets from exiting the nest. I then inject into the side of the nest to kill of the remaining hornets.

bald faced hornet nest ac
Bald Faced hornet nest under air conditioner in Chester Springs PA

There will always be hornets that were outside of the nest before the treatment occurs. These hornets’ jobs are to find food and other resources for the nest. Once the nest is treated, these hornets will hover around the nest opening but will not enter the treated nest.

Once the activity within the nest ceases, I removed the nest from under the air conditioner. The hornets that were out of the nest already return to the area where the nest was and will sometimes even collect where the former nest was located. For this reason, we always apply a residual liquid insecticide to the area where the nest was located.

hornet nest air conditioner

I used a Stihl backpack mist blower to apply Suspend Polyzone, which is a Deltamethrin chemical made my Bayer. The client will still some straggling hornets for the rest of the day but by the next day there should be no more hornets in the area of treatment.

I thought this hornet nest was unique because it was built directly underneath an air conditioner as opposed to the more commonly built nests in trees or bushes. Since the nest was mounted vertically, it had a flat top which is also unusual.

Yellow Jacket Nest in Wall Treatment

Our client in Oxford PA heard scratching and thought they had a rodent or wildlife infestation in their attic. They bought mouse and rat poison and traps to resolve the problem themselves. After the noise continued, they decided to call the professionals at Prudential Pest Solutions to help with their pest issue.

When I arrived at the house for the service call and walked to the front door, I noticed a lot of yellow jackets entering and exiting the roof line of the house. Right away I knew that the issue was not a mouse or squirrel, but a nest of yellow jackets in the wall somewhere.

After a brief inspection of the walls on the second story, I found a circular soft spot in the wall. This is where the yellow jacket nest was.

The wall was so thin where the nest was that I was able to poke my finger right into the wall. This is because the yellow jackets will chew at the drywall until it becomes paper thin.
