Yellow Jacket Nest in Ceiling Kennett Square

This yellow jacket nest was in the ceiling in a home in Kennett Square Pa. We located the nest due to the loud and audible sound the yellow jackets were making in the ceiling above the dormer window. The sound is like crimpling paper or crunching/chewing noises.

In addition to the noise, there is a very noticeable stain on the ceiling where we suspected the nest to be. This is also the are where the ceiling was very, very soft. This is because the yellow jacket nest is directly above the ceiling making the ceiling drywall very thin. In fact, the ceiling under the nest was only as thick as the paint applied on the ceiling.

We apply a product called Pyrocide 100 to the nest directly. I correctly mentioned this chemical initially and then incorrectly corrected myself into saying Pyrocide 1000. Pyrocide 1000 does not exist and we in fact used Pyrocide 100.

Since the ceiling is so soft directly under the yellow jacket nest, I was able to pierce into the area above the ceiling using only the tip of my B&G aerosol machine.

Once we start to apply the Pyrocide 100 into the nest, the treatment does not last very long. This is because the product we apply kills the yellow jackets within seconds of application. It also permeates the entire nest very quickly to ensure we kill the yellow jacket colony quickly.

At first when you apply the Pyrocide 100, the yellow jacket nest will erupt with the noise of hundreds of yellow jackets humming loudly. Within a few minutes, the entire area will be silent. This is when you know it is ok to start removing the nest and enlarging the hole in the drywall.

We always dry to minimize the damage we cause to the drywall. This means that we only remove the soft areas of drywall and cut out a nice square or rectangle shape. This allows us to remove all of the nest and will allow the person repairing the drywall to make an even repair.

hornet removal malvern

Hornet Nest Removal Malvern PA

This bald faced hornet nest was built on the front of the home above the garage. The client, located in Malvern Pennsylvania, noticed the nest about 15 feet above the ground.

We needed an extension ladder, bee suit, scraper, and chemical to treat and remove this bald faced hornet nest. The chemical we use is PT PI from the BASF company.

When you approach a bald faced hornet nest, the hornets will immediately come out to defend the nest against any possible threat. In this case, when we placed the ladder near the nest, the hornets came flying out to defend their home. After a minute or two the hornets calm down and you can carefully and slowly approach the nest.

I like to apply the chemical directly into the opening of the nest at first. This creates a dam of dead hornets that traps the rest of the colony inside of the nest. I then puncture into the side of the paper nest and apply chemical into the whole nest. This approach only works when you use a chemical that kills quickly and permeates the entire nest.

Once the hornets inside of the nest are dead, it is time to begin removing the nest from the structure. In this case, I simply used a paint scraper to remove the nest. I always like to see the inner workings of a bald faced hornet nest.

Yellow Jacket Nest Removal

Dead Yellow Jackets in the basement mean BIG trouble

Before calling us to treat and remove this yellow jacket nest, the client’s had noticed dead yellow jackets in their basement on the floor. At first, they assumed that maybe the yellow jackets had flown in through a window and couldn’t get out. This would have been true if there were only one or two dead yellow jackets found. Due to the large amount of dead yellow jackets in the basement, it was pretty evident that there was a yellow jacket nest IN the house.

While conducting a simple house project, the client moved some of the insulation along the sill plate and discovered a large yellow jacket nest. The yellow jackets had gained access to the basement by following a cable line from the outside of the home to the inside. Once they discovered the nest, they immediately called in the professionals at Prudential Pest Solutions to treat and remove the nest.

When we arrived at the home, the inspection and evaluation found the nest and where and how the yellow jackets had entered the home. We donned our protective suits and began the treatment process. The treatment process includes treating the nest, removing the nest, sealing up the entrance into the home, and cleaning up the nest and dead yellow jackets.

I use a chemical from BASF called PT PI as my primary treatment product for all stinging insects including yellow jackets, wasps, bees, and hornets. I love PT PI because as an aerosol it permeates the entire nest quickly and kills the insects almost instantly. This quick kill action is EXTREMELY important when you are in close quarters with thousands of stinging insects in a confined space.

During the treatment, the yellow jackets are dead within seconds. We remove the nest and immediately seal up the opening so no foraging yellow jackets come into the space and cause us problems. We then vacuum up the dead yellow jackets using our HEPA filter vacuum.

As a final treatment step, we treat the exterior of the home for general pests such as ants, spiders, and wasps.

This nest was treated and removed in late July in Coatesville Pennsylvania. The nest was in its building stage and if it had been left alone for another few weeks or months, the nest could easily have had thousands of yellow jackets in it.

The homeowners were lucky that they discovered the evidence and the nest while it was still relatively small. Had they accidentally disturbed the nest, the occupants of the home could have been swarmed by these dangerous stinging insects. Remember, unlike honey bees, yellow jackets are EXTREMELY aggressive and can sting repeatedly.

yellow jacket nest carpet

Carpet Hiding a Yellow Jacket Nest

Imagine it’s trash day and you are about to bring the rolled up carpet padding down to the road. You carelessly pick up the carpet not thinking anything about it when all of a sudden, BAM! You get absolutely tattooed by a nest of yellow jackets.

This almost happened to a client of ours in West Chester PA. We had just finished treating and removing a large yellow jacket nest in the backyard when I noticed some other yellow jackets hovering around some old, rolled up carpet. This rolled up carpet was from a prior renovation and was staged to be put in the trash.

As soon as I moved the top roll of carpet, a bunch of yellow jackets erupted from the pile. I was still wearing my bee suit, so I hit “play” on the camera and was able to capture the treatment.

We ALWAYS check around the property for other pest issues before we leave a job. This ensures we do not miss other big pest issues. Thankfully we spotted this nest and were able to treat and remove it before anyone was hurt.

Yellow Jacket Nest in Ceiling in Kennett Square PA

August, September, and October are the most common months where yellow jackets, hornets, and wasp nests are at their largest in Pennsylvania. This yellow jacket nest was in the ceiling of a home in Kennett Square Pa.

How did we know where the yellow jacket nest was?

This yellow jacket nest was located in between the drywall of the ceiling and the fiberglass insulation above the ceiling. The clients could hear the buzzing, scratching, and chewing of the yellow jackets in their growing nest.

In addition to the noise that the nest was generating, we were able to locate the nest due to the slight staining showing on the ceiling. As the yellow jackets create their nest, they chew at the drywall of the area near their nest. This results in the drywall being EXTREMELY thin in the area directly under the nest.

In fact, the drywall can be so degraded from the yellow jackets and moisture of the nest that you can put your finger right through the ceiling with minimal effort at all!

Sometimes the homeowner thinks there is a water leak above the ceiling due to the staining on the drywall. We even had a homeowner poke his finger through the drywall thinking it was a water leak. Much to their surprise and horror, they had pierced directly into a yellow jacket nest!

Professional Yellow Jacket Treatment

Once we identify where the yellow jacket nest is, then we perform a pinpoint treatment to eradicate and remove the nest. For the yellow jacket nest in the ceiling in Kennett Square, we applied an aerosol insecticide to the nest to quickly kill the yellow jackets.

Once the nest has been treated, we removed the nest by opening up the drywall of the ceiling. We always remove as little drywall as possible. This usually means we only remove the damage drywall that the yellow jackets were chewing at.

We then apply a longer residual insecticidal dust to the area above the ceiling to treat any yellow jackets that escaped our initial treatment. Then the hole is taped up and a drywall repair professional is called to repair the ceiling and patch the area.

How did the yellow jackets get in the ceiling?

Yellow jackets are very good at finding small gaps in brick, siding, and soffitting to enter homes and structures. For this nest in Kennett Square, the yellow jackets had entered the structure where the dormer roof met the main roof. The yellow jackets then went into the structure a foot or two and created their nest.

How to keep animals out from under your shed and deck

Animals such as rabbits, groundhogs, and skunks love to make their home under porches, decks, and sheds. After you remove the animal by trapping, what can you do to keep animals from out from under your shed and deck?

How to prevent digging animals from getting under your shed?

Digging animals such as skunks and groundhogs are experts at excavating dirt and stone from under and around porches, decks, and sheds to create a den. Oftentimes, homeowners will attempt to block the animals by placing stones or other blocking material at the edge of the structure.

Since skunks and groundhogs are built for digging, they can easily dig under the stone or blocking material to get back under the shed, deck, or porch.

The most effective way to keep animals out from under your structures is to install an exclusion system that goes UNDERGROUND.

Dig Defence is an exclusion system that keeps animals out!

For professionals such as us, we use a product called Dig Defence. Dig Defence is a solid steel fencing product that installs flush to the structure and is installed under the ground to prevent those digging animals.

commercial dig defence installation keeps animals out from under sheds, decks, and porches

We use the commercial grade Dig Defence where each section measures 4 feet wide by 15 inches tall. Since the product is 15″ tall, we can ensure that even the most motivated digging animal won’t be able to dig under the structure.

The galvanized steel construction of the material ensures a rust-proof, long term solution to keeping wildlife out from under structures!

dig defence keeps animals out from under shed
installing dig defence around a shed will keep skunks and groundhogs from living under sheds, decks, and porches

Keeping animals out while still looking good!

Not only does Dig Defence keep the animals out from under your porch, deck, and shed, it also blends right in. When installed, the Dig Defence sits flush to the structure and low to the ground. This allows the product to not be noticeable to people while still keeping animals out.

Depending on the height of the structure, more of the Dig Defence may be visible. If this is the case, we install some decorative lattice over the Dig Defence to camouflage the product.

Preventing Wildlife under your porch, deck, and shed

Whether you currently have a skunk, groundhog, or rabbit under your porch, deck, or shed, or you want to prevent that from every happening, Dig Defence is the BEST product!

Animals digging under your fence?

If you have a fenced in yard, animals can often dig under the fence to get into your yard. Dig Defence can be installed along the entire fenceline or just where the animal activity is.

Maybe you don’t need to keep animals out of your yard, but need to keep them in?

Dogs love to dig and sometimes our furry friends can dig themselves to freedom! Dig Defence is strong enough to prevent any sized dog from digging out of your yard and escaping.

A homeowner’s children kept telling their father that they were finding dead yellow jackets in the basement. The father thought that the few yellow jackets that were in the basement simply came in through a window and couldn’t get back out.

In this case, the homeowner was working on a home project and moved some insulation along the sill in his basement. Luckily he spotted the big yellow jacket nest BEFORE he continued with his project. Had he aggravated the nest, the homeowner could have been seriously injured.

how do hornets make their nest

Yellow Jackets Under the Deck

We had a client recently that was seeing yellow jackets fly out from under her deck. The client had already gone through many wasp and hornets spray cans before she finally called us to treat the problem.

Spraying did not solve the problem

Where the client was spraying was where she was seeing the wasps entering and exiting the area under the deck. The problem with this method was that she would have NEVER eradicated the nest itself.

The yellow jacket nest was in the ground, under a bag and some debris at lease 6 feet from where she was spraying. The ONLY way to treat this yellow jacket nest was to physically go under the deck and treat the nest directly.

How we treated and eradicated this nest

The first step when getting into a confined space with a bunch of stinging insects is to properly protect yourself. I use a bee veil, hard hat, long sleeve jacket, and long pants.

After entering the space, I spotted where the yellow jackets were entering and exiting their hole in the ground. I approached the opening of the nest and applied an aerosol insecticide called P.T. P.I.

P.T. P.I is a very fast acting, quick killing aerosol that permeates the nest fast and kills the yellow jackets almost instantly. This product is perfect for when you need to kill the yellow jackets fast because you are in an enclosed area like we were under the deck.

Removing the nest

how do hornets make their nest
how do hornets make their nests?

Once the nest has been treated, I was able to move away the debris and expose the entire nest. It’s important to remove the nest so no new yellow jackets emerge from the treated nest. Although the adults were dead in the nest, yellow jackets will still hatch or emerge from their brood cells even after a treatment.

If we were not able to remove and destroy the nest, then applying a long lasting residual insecticidal dust to the nest opening would be sufficient to prevent re-infestation. The dust has a much longer residential than the aerosol and provides long lasting treatment.

carpenter bee

How to treat for carpenter bees

Carpenter Bees are wood destroying insects that are most commonly found hovering around homes, sheds, and garages. We will show you how to treat for carpenter bees.

Why do I have carpenter bees?

Carpenter bees tend to damage unpainted and untreated wood. Often we will find them under railings and under flashing. These areas are often not painted because you can’t see them.

Carpenter bees will find the smallest of areas that are unpainted and untreated and make their 1/2″ holes.

Some carpenter bees will damage and drill unto painted and treated wood. Painting or staining your wood is a good general deterrent but will not prevent all carpenter bees from damage.

Find the carpenter bee holes

carpenter bee hole
carpenter bee exit hole and excrement

Sometimes the carpenter bee holes are visible and easily seen. Other times, we can see the carpenter bees hovering around but don’t see the holes.

Finding and treating the carpenter bee exit holes is the ONLY effective way of resolving your carpenter bee infestation.

If the carpenter bee exit holes are not visible, then we need to look for other evidence. When carpenter bees chew into the wood, they excrete wood onto the surface opposite the hole.

This yellow or brown excrement will tell you exactly where the carpenter bee hole is.

Another method to find the carpenter bee exit hole is to look for the pile of sawdust. Since they are chewing into the wood, the bees create a pile of sawdust directly UNDER where the hole is.

Treat EACH and EVERY hole with an insect dust

carpenter bee damage
carpenter bee damage

Spraying at the carpenter bees or spraying the carpenter bee holes is NOT an effective treatment strategy. The carpenter bees make very elaborate and deep channels within the wood and a spray will simply not reach deep into the wood.

We recommend using an insect dust labeled and listed to treat carpenter bees. In the video above we used a product called Tempo Dust. Delta Dust, Alpine Dust, and others are also very effective at treating for carpenter bees.

Using a duster, which is a tool used to apply dust, treat each and every carpenter bee hole. This may sound like a daunting task, but treating every carpenter bee hole does 3 things for us:

  1. Kills the carpenter bees that are in the carpenter bee holes and channels
  2. Will kill the carpenter bees when they return to their holes if they aren’t currently in there
  3. The dust will kill any new carpenter bees that hatch in the wood

Make sure to find and treat EVERY single carpenter bee exit hole that you can. Look for holes AND the evidence of holes such as saw dust and excrement.

The dust, unlike a spray or aerosol, will permeate throughout the chambers and galleries in the wood. Dust will also last SIGNIFICANTLY longer than sprays and aerosols.

carpenter bee after treatment
carpenter bee after treatment

After you treat the carpenter bees holes with a dust you start to see the carpenter bees emerge from the holes. The bees will be covered in the white dust and will fall from their holes.

Within a few hours you will notice significantly less carpenter bees flying around.

When should you call a professional to treat for carpenter bees?

Treating for carpenter bees around a shed or deck can be pretty straightforward. You should call a professional if the carpenter bees are:

  • Too high off the ground. Professional exterminators have tools and ladders to reach carpenter bee holes very high off the ground.
  • You can’t find the holes. Finding the holes is the ONLY way to effectively resolve your carpenter bee issue.
  • You’re not comfortable being around flying insects. As you are treating the holes, the carpenter bees will be flying around and hovering in and near your personal space.

ant exterminator

Ants by the front door

We had a client recently that said they were seeing ants by the front door. The front door area is a common area where ants enter a home. As we will see, the ants weren’t coming in the front door, but under the floor!

Why are the ants by the front door?

Besides the kitchen, the front door area is a hot spot for ant and insect activity. This is because the front door area of a home is designed for allowing entrance and egress to and from the home.

Oftentimes, ants and other pests can simply walk right under the front door! Making sure you have a functioning weather seal under your door will keep pests out and probably save you money on your heating and cooling bills!

Ants like moisture!

When you go outside from your front door, what do you see? Often people have porches, decks, or stairs coming off from their front door. Moisture is a HUGE attractant for ants and pests and the area outside of your front door is a huge MAGNET for moisture!

Affordable Ant Control West Chester
Affordable Ant Control West Chester

How did we actually treat the ant infestation?

We can use a multitude of treatment options to eradicate an ant infestation. In the scenario above, where the ants were under the floor boards, we performed the following treatment:

When we removed the HVAC vent cover and saw the ants and the EGGS, we decided to use a spray treatment method to eradicate the ant infestation. We chose this method over baiting, dust, aerosol and other methods because the nest was open and EXPOSED.

Whenever you find the nest itself, it is always best to spray and eradicate it then and there.

What happens if the ant nest isn’t exposed or can’t be accessed?

If the nest was not exposed, and we saw the ants coming and going from under the floor boards, then we would have used a different treatment method.

Ant Baits

Ant baits work by taking advantage of the ant’s social nature and social structure. Bait is applied to where the worker ants will come across it and feed on it. The workers then take the bait back to the nest and feed it to their fellow ants.

If the bait works too fast and kills the worker, then it will not make it back to the colony. Baits work great for active ant trails.

Other Ant Treatment Methods

In the scenario above, we could have applied dust, foam, or an aerosol to the crevice where the ants were coming and going from under the floor. These methods can work similar to the bait by using transference properties but do not rely on being a food source.

Dust treatments often have a very long residual life making them great for long term ant and insect control.
